Surrey appoints Vice-Provost of Research and Innovation
Professor David Sampson will become Vice-Provost of Research and Innovation at the University of Surrey

Professor Sampson joins the University of Surrey from his current role at the University of Western Australia in Perth, where he is Head of the Optical and Biomedical Engineering Laboratory and Director of the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis. He has previously held positions at the University of Melbourne and the University of Kent.

With over 25 years’ research experience in industry and academia in photonics, optics, and microscopy and their application to communications, sensors and biomedicine, Professor Sampson is an acclaimed expert in his field and has been awarded a number of coveted prizes including the Western Australian Innovator of the Year award. He is a Fellow of IEEE. 

David’s outstanding personal research record and wealth of experience in both the higher education and government sectors

Professor David Sampson said: “I am honoured by this appointment and look forward to working with my new colleagues to help shape Surrey’s future. The University of Surrey already has a reputation for excellent research and teaching and learning, and I hope to help build on these successes and elevate Surrey’s research to even greater levels.” 

Professor Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, added: “An internationally-recognised authority in photonics, David’s outstanding personal research record and wealth of experience in both the higher education and government sectors make him the ideal leader to drive forward our institution’s ambitious research and innovation strategy.” 

David will take up the role in January 2018.
