A key way tech is transforming the student experience is the growth of blended learning and online immersive educational content.

Tech-savvy students expect to be able to consume their learning material using the technology they have grown up with – smartphones, tablets and laptops.

This is fantastic news for students, providing more choice and flexibility in how they learn. But it poses serious challenges for higher education institutions in managing the production of media-rich course content and handling copyrighted materials.

A new software system first built for the Open University – world leaders in distance learning – addresses these challenges. The software is called Production Mill and it provides an end-to-end system to manage the processes for creating course content and managing licensed copyrighted materials.

Glen Harding (above), Founder and CEO of Production Mill, believes this system will help educational institutions benefit from the experience of the pioneers of online learning at the Open University. He said: “Production Mill is the culmination of four years of simultaneous development and real-life usage at one of the world’s most prolific creators of educational content. This system manages the production of all types of educational output from the Open University – audio and video content, books, e-books, promotional material and TV and radio programmes.

“The growth in blended, online and distance learning is changing the face of education. Our system helps universities keep on top of their production workflows – making it easier and more cost effective for them to develop creative and engaging learning material.”
